Terms we use.
Standard terms where a standard exists — the U.S. National CAD Standard (NCS), which carries CSI’s Uniform Drawing System, and CSI MasterFormat. The three under “Ours” are our own.
On the drawings
- Mark — the identifier in the first column of a schedule, used on the drawings to tag each item: D-12, PT-1. NCS, Schedules module. Revit: Mark, Type Mark.
- Schedule — a table on the drawings listing items by mark, with their properties. NCS, Schedules module.
- Legend — a key on the drawings explaining symbols, materials or finishes.
- Keynote — a numbered note on a drawing. A reference keynote is rooted in a specification section number and ties the drawing to the specifications; a sheet keynote is a note with no tie to the specifications. NCS, Notations module — the idea began as ConDoc.
In the Project Manual
- Architectural Technical Specifications — our specifications service: the architectural technical sections of your Project Manual, written to your drawings. Architectural scope only.
- Architectural technical section — one section of those specifications, numbered and titled per CSI MasterFormat. The unit we count and price.
- Project Manual — the bound volume of procurement and contracting requirements and specifications that accompanies the drawings.
- Division 00 — Procurement and Contracting Requirements. CSI MasterFormat.
- Division 01 — General Requirements: how the work is administered. CSI MasterFormat.
- Front End — Divisions 00 and 01 together.
- Basis of design — the product the specifications are written around; where alternates are allowed, they are evaluated against it.
- Table of contents — the list of specification sections for the project. Once you approve it, it is the scope.
Ours
- Laning — deciding, item by item, which document carries it: the drawings, the specifications, both (and coordinated), or neither — a finding.
- Specifications Coordination Report — laning, delivered as a report: the architectural drawings read for what the Architectural Technical Specifications need, with findings and a table of contents for approval. Architectural scope only.
- Finding — an item in our Specifications Coordination Report, ranked A (blocks writing), B (costs money in the field) or C (tidy-up).
